Art: van der Vorst

Hello friends!

On my journey to finding my own unique drawing style, I enjoy browsing around Pinterest for different types of art styles to try out every now and then. My art boards (yes - boardS) literally have 300+ pins total! (I kind of have a problem.) My current new obsession is artist Lieke van der Vorst's creative and minimalist style of depicting life's small joyous moments. I can't get over how ahh-mazing her simple style is. She also does an astounding job incorporating patterns and subtle uses of color here and there.

Here are some of my personal favorites of van der Vorst's:

There are SO many more gorgeous ones out there so please do check her out! I even took the liberty to try out her style on my own! My usual art style isn't really the whole clean-lines-sharp-outline sort of deal, so it was really interesting trying out a new style. An hour of black-strokes-on-paper later, this is what I got:

I am honestly genuinely so so happy with it!

With the whole art feature aside, I also want to add a little personal story time.

For me, while imitating others' styles, I often find myself getting quite upset with how my artwork turns out because it "didn't have the exact same shade as [artist]", or "I drew that person's hair too big." However, friendly reminder (for myself and those who struggle from the same thing), that art is art. If this was yours, and you accidentally made an unintended squiggle here and there, others would try to copy that.

This time drawing this, was one of the few times ever that I felt okay with the girl's ponytail not turning out like van der Vorst's. Or how my people don't have realistic faces like hers. Or how I took our a person at the end of the table.
